What is an ingrown toenail?
An Ingrown toenail is a painful condition of the toe. It occurs when a sharp nail edge digs into the skin at the side of the toe. Pain and inflammation of the skin down the side of the nail often occurs first and it can affect any toe. The sooner it’s treated the better. If left too long infection could strike.
How Does This Happen?
There are many reasons why you can develop an ingrown toenail:
Genetically your nails may be predisposed to splaying or curling
History of injury or trauma
Medical conditions and medication affecting nail health
Nail picking and/or nail biting
Tight fitting footwear/socks can irritate the nails and surrounding soft tissue
Nail health (weak or brittle nails, excessive sweating)
Poor nail cutting technique
What Are The Symptoms Of An Ingrowing Toenail?
Inflammation (redness and tenderness) surrounding the nail area
Discharge (blood, pus or exudate)
Pain in the toe or nail region
Swelling around the toenail
Infection can sometimes be a symptom of a nail infection. Keep an eye out for a hot, swollen toe, with redness or darkening skin discolouration tracking up the foot and/or discharge (pus) from the nail edge. If you think you may have an infection, please contact your GP for a review as you may require antibiotics.

Are you currently suffering with callus (hard skin) corns and/or problematic toenails? If so you may need to see a Podiatrist for one of our Core Podiatry/Chiropody assessments and treatment.
Core Routine Podiatry/Chiropody Care (returning patients)
The Foot MOT. Core podiatry encompasses all methods of foot health management including treatment of the nails and skin as well as assessment of vascular/neurological status.
Nail Surgery
Treatment for ingrown, distorted and/or fungal nails. An offending section of an ingrown nail will often cause pain, inflammation and in some cases, infection. It is therefore imperative that this problem is treated in a timely and efficient manner to avoid further complication. Price includes 2 x follow up appointments.
Toenail Cutting Service
Do you struggle to cut your own toenails and have no other problems with your feet? Our toenail cutting service maybe the best option for you.
