What is ESWT?

Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy is a multidisciplinary device used in Podiatry, Orthopaedics, Physiotherapy and Sports medicine. Shockwave therapy is approved by NICE Guidelines. NICE guidelines are evidence-based recommendations for health and care in England. They set out the care and services suitable for most people with a specific condition or need, and people in particular circumstances or settings.

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that involves creating a series of low energy acoustic waves that are directly delivered to an injury through contact with the skin via an ultrasound gel medium.
Shockwaves are said to promote the body’s own healing response to injury.
The shockwaves are mechanical and not electric, they are audible, low-energy sound waves that work by increasing blood flow to the injured area to assist the healing process in chronically injured tissues.

What can I Expect?

As a new patient you will need to attend an Initial Appointment where your eligibility for the course of treatment will first be determined. If eligible and safe to commence treatment we will take you through the consent process and explain in detail the following: the intended benefits, low level risks of the treatment and what to do prior to and after your treatment.

Usually, you will require 3-4 treatments spaced at 1-2 week intervals alongside your rehabilitation programme provided by your health care professional.

You may experience some discomfort during your treatment, but a member of our team will be on hand to monitor your pain scores throughout and reduce intensity/ frequency if intolerable.

The activity intensity following treatment will be advised to you. We do ask that you have relative rest on the day of treatment. If this clashes with work, we tend to recommend coming for appointments later in the day.

Why should I have ESWT?

ESWT is offered to patients who have not responded well enough to other treatments which may include but are not limited to:

Physiotherapy  |  Stretching/ loading and activity modification  |  Taping  |  Orthoses  |  Other shoe inserts  |  Bracing/ Splinting  |  Rest and ice therapy  |  Pain medication

We often use Shockwave Therapy in conjunction with many of the above treatments. SHOCKWAVE IS VERY RARELY USED IN ISOLATION.

This ground breaking non-invasive method of relieving pain and restoring function has been shown to be a positive and successful treatment of certain conditions affecting the foot and ankle which can include:

Achilles Tendinopathy
Plantar Fasciitis/ Plantar Fasciopathy
Other Tendinopathies: Posterior Tibial tendinopathy, Tibialis Anterior Tendinopathy and others.
